About me

Hi, my name is Emma and I am an Aussie health and fitness fanatic. My health journey first began back in 2016 where I was dealing with some gut issues. To combat this, I decided to fix my diet and adopt a healthier way of living. In 2017, I started my Instagram page @nourishbyemma to share my recipes and food. Little did I know I would be doing the same thing 3 years down the track! Emma Wilks created this recipe - Salted caramel smoothie with hemp protein The thing I love most about what I do is hearing peoples feedback and experience with my recipes. So please, if you do give one of my recipes a go, shoot me a DM on Instagram to let me know how it went!

Why create a smoothie with hemp protein?

Not many people are aware of this super ingredient. Hemp protein is a wonderfull plant-based protein that is readily digested and contains all the essential amino acids we need to function. What is more, unlike most proteins it contains fibre - about 8g per serve! Fibre has been linked to many health benefits, including gut health. Most other plant-based proteins, like soy or pea, are highly refined and contain a higher percentage of protein than than hemp protein but little fibre. Hemp protein powder offers a great way to get both into your diet. Be careful with which brand of hemp protein you buy, as they are not all the same. Some contain too much residual seed husk, which is gritty and insoluble. I've shopped around a lot and found Vasse Valley's hemp protein powder to be the best tasting and it blends well in a smoothie.

A smoothie recipe with spinach

You may have noticed the smoothie looks green in the picture. Not like you'd expect for a salted caramel recipe at all! That's because this is a smoothie recipe with spinach! Spinach is so frikkin good for you and has such a mild flavour that I use in in ALL of my smoothies! You'd be crazy not to!

A dairy free smoothie!

Dairy doesn't agree with everyone. In fact, dairy intolerance is becoming more common. Luckily, plant-based milk alternatives are abundant. In this recipe I've used almond milk as its quite mild. For those with a sweeter tooth, use sweetened almond milk. Ok, enough talk. On with the recipe!
